Digging Tools

There are many different digging tools available  to choose from and here are a couple you might want to give a try.

Japanese Farmers Knife

A great metal detecting tool from an unlikely place. Lee Valley wood working tools has a gardening division and I bought this " Japanese Farmers Knife" there. It is thick and strong and cheaper than similar tools offered in metal detecting shops. Worth checking out. It is great for cutting plugs, hacking through obstructions and working in real hard soil.

gouge

A beautiful 1886 Fishscale, at least it was before I gouged it. I did in a couple more 100 year plus coins before I discovered another must have tool.

This is Garrets coin digging kit. In it is a plastic  digger that is extremely strong and does far less damage to goodies than a steel tool. Be careful though, this is an extremely strong tool for being plastic and can damage a coin or button if you are not careful. Since getting this I have not damaged a coin or button. You can get the digger seperate it's part number is 1606000

Just a note on cutting plugs. I believe start with a larger plug,  there is less of a chance that you have to expand the the hole if your pinpointing goes array.  Expanding a hole always leaves a mess and increases the chance that the plug will not survive.I also belive a larger plug has a better chance of recovery than small plugs Also I never cut wonderful perfectly  round plugs. They are very easy to spot as being un-natural and should the plug not survive it looks even worse.
