Coil Brace

The Explorer connects to the coil at a housing located at the rear of the coil. Because the coil is so large the coil  has a tendency to droop and flop up and down. With the tight  bend where the coil wire to feeds inside the shaft housing this can put to much stress on the cable. Now Sunray  makes a coil support for this they were out of stock when I ordered it so in the mean time I came up with this. It works very well and may have added additional strength to the lower  shaft connection which may have helped in avoiding some cracking on the lower joint which some have trouble with.

coilbrace1I have removed the stock coil stand for two reasons. First it would snag on almost anything and also with it on it just seemed that I could not get the coil nuts threaded on very far.

coilbrace1aHere is a close up of the home made coil brace. I took a bevel square and set the detector to the angle that I found most comfortable and then adjusted the bevel square to match the angle. Then I simply cut a piece of Lexan with angle and notched out a space for the lower connector housing. Trimmed it up some and then attached it with plastic ty-wraps. I works great but I find the coil is somewhat buoyant and in the water it tips it self up. Will work on that this spring.

The blue circle is where some people have had some problems with cracking. As I said before this has not happened because of the coil support I built. It seems to help distribute the stress over the length of the shaft better.

The red circle just highlights the tight corner the coil cable has to make which is why you don't want the coil flopping around to muchcoilbrace4a
