TORONTO ARGONAUTS (2-8) AT HAMILTON
TIGER-CATS (6-4)

STADIUM

GAME NOTES

The Argonauts face off against arch-rival Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a pivotal
North Division match-up at Ivor Wynne Stadium. The Boatmen sit three
games back of the Tabbies and need a victory to close in on a playoff spot.
The injury riddled Argos will shuffle their roster in preparation for the Cats
after losing at least five starters to injuries in last week's Labor Day loss
(48-27) to the San Antonio Texans. The Cats also dropped their Labor
Day weekend contest, on the wrong end of a 41-14 score. This is the
second and final regular season meeting between these two teams in the
1995 campaign (see THE RIVALRY) and the 175th meeting between
these two teams since the merging of the Wildcats and Tigers in 1946.
Since the two teams met in Week #6, the Argos have gone 0-5 while
the Tiger-Cats have gone 4-1. This year marks the 10th anniversary of
the HAROLD BALLARD MEMORIAL TROPHY. With a victory over the
Argonauts, Hamilton would take the 1995 edition of the Ballard Trophy
having defeated the Argos once already in 1995.

LAST WEEK: The Argonauts dropped their fifth straight contest and
fourth consecutive home game 48-27 on Labor Day Monday defeated
by quarterback David Archer and the San Antonio Texans. Under Archer's
command, the lone star crew rolled up 524 net offensive yards. The contest
was a costly one for the Argos as they lost the services of all-Canadians
PIERRE VERCHEVAL (severe calf pull) and middle linebacker CALVIN TIGGLE
(knee cartilidge tear) in the game's opening minutes. The news would
get worse for the Boatmen as two more defensive starters would go down
with possible season-ending knee injuries -- LEON HATZIIOANNOU and
TONY O'BILLOVICH. Quarterback KENT AUSTINreceived a minor
concussion and was also forced to leave the game while the Argos' defensive
player-of-the-game JERMAINE YOUNGER(four def. tackles, two ST hits,
one QB sack and one fumble recovery) discovered he had torn knee
ligaments suffered in the second quarter of his Argonaut debut. In all, the
Argos lost five starters in the Texan contest. Receiver Paul Masotti shone
once again bringing in four catches for 103 yards and his first TD of the year.
For the Stoney Creek, Ont. native, that was his 11th career 100-yard receiving
game, and fourth of the 1995 campaign. All-purpose phenom MIKE (PINBALL)
CLEMONS recorded 158 combined yards and with 1,456 all-purpose yards,
will look to overtake the Pirates' Freeman Baysinger (1,464 yards) for third
spot in the CFL's all-purpose yards race.

THE LINEUP: The Argonauts have made eight roster changes since the
48-27 loss to the San Antonio Texans. Inserted into the lineup are
linebackers BRETT COLLINS, EUDEAN TONEY and SHELDON BENOIT,
running back GEORGE NIMAKO, offensive lineman CARL COULTER, receivers
AINSWORTH MORGAN and JIMMY CUNNINGHAM and defensive lineman
STEVE BRANNON. Not dressing for the Hamilton contest are: defensive lineman
Leon Hatziioannou (injured), linebackers Peter Miller (released), Calvin Tiggle,
Jermaine Younger and Tony O'Billovich (all injured), receivers Jock Climie (injured)
and Pat Coleman (practice roster) and guard Pierre Vercheval (injured).

RIVALRY: The Argonauts and Tiger-Cats renew the oldest rivalry
in professional sports with head to head contests since 1873. The
Argonauts (70-100-4 lifetime against the Tabbies) and Tiger-Cats will be
squaring off for the 175th time since 1946 -- the year the Wildcats and
Tigers amalgamated. This is the second and final meeting between
these two clubs in 1995 regular season play. The Argos hosted the
Tabbies Aug. 3 and were defeated in overtime 20-16 on the strength of
two Paul Osbaldiston field goals in extra time. Pivot Kent Austin recorded
his first 400-yard passing game (459 yards) as an Argonaut in that
overtime loss. He was also one pass attempt shy of the club mark for
single-game attempts with 53. The two clubs met twice in 1994 action
with the Argos taking both contests. On Oct. 2, 1994 the Argonauts
posted four fourth quarter touchdowns to spark the biggest fourth quarter
comeback in the teams' history, winning 39-36. Pivot MARVINGRAVES
engineered the 28 unanswered points after spelling the injured ERIK WHITE
late in the third quarter. The Argos also defeated the Cats 31-19 at
Ivor Wynne Stadium in the Labour Day tilt Sept. 5 and so with the
season sweep, the Boatmen captured the HAROLD E. BALLARD
MEMORIAL TROPHY. The award, named in honor of the late owner of
the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, is presented annually to the winner of the regular
season series between the Argos and the Tiger-Cats. This is the
tenth year since the Trophy's inception, dating back to 1986. The
Argonauts have taken the title every year except 1989, 1992 and 1993.

Below is a breakdown of the season series since its inception.

	Year	Winner	Series
	1986	Toronto	2-1
	1987	Toronto	3-1
	1988	Toronto	2-2
	1989	Hamilton	4-0
	1990	Toronto	3-0
	1991	Toronto	3-1
	1992	Hamilton	3-0
	1993	Hamilton	3-0
	1994	Toronto	2-0

MASOTTI SLOWLY CREEPING: Standout receiver Paul Masotti is
creeping up on some team marks: The 30-year old Acadia product has
a consecutive game pass catching streak of 35 games ranking fourth on
the Argos' all-time list. He needs three more games to catch ex-Argo
Mike Eben's record of 38 consecutive games with receptions (D.K. Smith
leads the pack with a 96-game streak). The last time Masotti
played a game without making a reception was Oct. 31, 1993. Masotti has
also piled up 4,882 receiving yards over his nine years with Toronto.
That total is fifth best in club history. He needs to reach 5,867 yards to
surpass Paul Pearson's fourth-ranked mark. Masotti surpassed
Bobby Taylor's mark of 4,140 career yards in Week #1. With 279 career
receptions (also fifth all-time) Masotti still tops the top-5 Argo career-yarders
with a 19.2-yard average (the next best is Bobby Taylor's mark of 17.5
yards per catch).

PINBALL BOUNCES TO CAREER MILESTONE: Mike Clemons will
play in his 100th career CFL contest at Ham., Sept. 9. In 100 games he:
has rushed for 100 yards once, recorded five 100-yard receiving games, has
recorded the single-season record for all-purpose yards with 3,300 in 1990,
led the CFL in punt return yardage (1990), has broken or set no less than five
club records (single-season punt return yards, career punt return yards, career
punt returns, punt return TDs and single-game kickoff returns), has been
awarded the CFL's Tom Pate Award in 1993, has been named an all-
East all star twice (1990 and 1993), was voted all-Canadian in 1993 and
was named the Argos' Ironman in 1994. He is a strong candidate for the
team's most valuable player award.

THE COACH: The winningest coach in the team's 122-year history,
Bob O'Billovich, 55, returned for a third stint as head coach of the Toronto
Argonauts Aug. 28, 1995 and is gunning for his 106th career victory. "Obie",
as he has come to be known, reached exclusive milestones when he
notched his 100th coaching victory Fri., July 29, 1994 vs. Las Vegas and
then coached in his 200th career CFL contest on Oct. 2, 1994 vs. Hamilton.
He joins only Frank Clair (260 games in 19 seasons), Eagle Keys (246
games in 16 seasons) and Ray Jauch (206 games in 13 seasons) in the
elusive and exclusive 200-or-more-club. His coaching legacy in Toronto
includes two CFL coach-of-the-year awards, three trips to the Grey Cup
and one championship in 1983. In 11 full seasons in the CFL, O'Billovich-
coached teams made the playoffs nine times. The Butte, Mont. native,
originally signed on with the Argos on Dec. 30, 1981 to inherit a team that
had won only two of 16 games the previous season. He promptly led the
club to its first winning season since 1973 and a Grey Cup berth for the
first time in 11 years. He would go on to win the CFL's coach-of-the-year
award twice. He re-joined the Argos as GM/Head Coach on Sept. 10/93.
O'Billovich joined the B.C. Lions as VP, Football Operations/Head Coach
in September, 1990. The Lions finished at 11-7 in 1991, and made the
Western Division playoffs for the first time since 1988. O'Billovich was born
on June 30, 1940 and played football at the University of Montana. He was
selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1962 Draft and played for the
Denver Broncos before embarking on a CFL career with Ottawa in 1963 as
a DB/QB. He retired in 1967. After a stint in the Canadian university ranks,
he joined the Rough Riders in 1976 as an assistant until joining the Argos
in 1982. No stranger to Halls-of-Fame, O'Billovich was amongst the first group
ever to be inducted into the Butte (Montana)Hall in 1988. He was then added
to Montana's Grizzly Hall of Fame after lettering nine times in football,
basketball and baseball, captaining all three teams. He also resides in the
University's football and basketball halls-of-fame. Bob and wife Judy have
three children _ Tracy, 24, Jody, 22, and Coy, 20. His CFL coaching record
stands at 105 wins, 98 losses and three ties in 13 seasons, fourth-ranked
in CFLhistory.
