GAME #6
HAMILTON TIGER-CATS(2-3)
AT TORONTO ARGONAUTS (2-3)

GAME NOTES

THE SKINNY: The Argonauts face their arch-rivals, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, in the
first of two games between these teams in 1995. The Argonauts return from a three-game
road swing with one victory, recorded on Saturday. In that contest the Argos needed
overtime to edge the Memphis Mad Dogs 10-7 at Tennessee’s Liberty Bowl. For the
Argos, the much-needed victory allowed them to keep pace in their division. The win was
their first on the road in 1995. The Argonauts defence has not allowed a touchdown in
the last two games and held Memphis to only 200 net offensive yards last week. The
Argo defence is the toughest in the League to score a passing touchdown against having
surrendered only three. The Memphis contest marked the third consecutive game in which
the starting quarterback was knocked from the game due to injury. Last week, starter
ERIK WHITE gave way to rookie ROBERT DOUGHERTY in the second quarter after
suffering a bruised sternum. Dougherty, seeing his first action of his pro career, went 11
of 18 for 80 yards and rushed seven times for 44 yards. Dougherty took the Argos
downfield in the game’s final drive allowing for a WAYNE LAMMLE 37-yard field goal
with one second remaining in the second overtime period for the victory. Lammle was
named the Argos’ special teams player-of-the-game in his best outing of the season. He
punted 14 times, just one kick shy of the club record, for an average of 45 yards out-
dueling canine kicker Chris Gardere and added two field goals including a season-long 49
yarder. The overtime game was the first since the 1992 season opener when the Ottawa
Rough Riders squeaked past the Argos 53-42 July 9th at Frank Clair Stadium. The Cats
meanwhile are looking to regain their winning form after dropping their last two games to
Edmonton and Memphis. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the
HAROLD BALLARD MEMORIAL TROPHY. The Argonauts will be defending
possession of the award, presented annually to the winner of the season series (see The
Rivalry below). Argo quarterback MARVIN GRAVESwill make his 1995 debut, eight
weeks after undergoing back surgery to correct two herniated discs. After sitting out the
Memphis contest with injury, quarterback KENT AUSTIN and receiver PAUL MASOTTI,
will be ready for action. There are no less than nine former Argos on the Tabbie roster
(see Switching Sides below).

LINEUP CHANGES FOR HAMILTON: The Argos will make four lineup
changes for the Hamilton contest. Inserted into the lineup and making their 1995 debuts
are: Defensive tackle CARLOS FOWLER, defensive back ERIC HOSKINS and
quarterback MARVIN GRAVES. Receiver PAUL MASOTTI returns to active duty since
missing the Memphis contest with a hamstring strain. Not dressing for the Tabbie contest
are receiver Lee Gissendaner (practice roster), defensive end Eric Blount (leg), linebacker
Sheldon Benoit (practice roster) and quarterback Robert Dougherty (practice roster).

THE RIVALRY: The Argonauts and Tiger-Cats renew the oldest rivalry in
professional sports with head to head contests since 1873. The two clubs have met 173
times since 1946 with the Argonauts recording 70 victories against 99 losses and four ties.
The last time these teams met was Oct. 2, 1994 when the Argonauts posted four fourth
quarter touchdowns to spark the biggest fourth quarter comeback in the teams’ history,
winning 39-36. Pivot MARVIN GRAVES engineered the 28 unanswered points after
spelling the injured ERIK WHITElate in the third quarter. The Argos also defeated the
Cats 31-19 at Ivor Wynne Stadium in the Labour Day tilt Sept. 5 and so with the season
sweep, the Boatmen captured the HAROLD E. BALLARD MEMORIAL TROPHY. The
award, named in honor of the late owner of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, is presented annually
to the winner of the regular season series between the Argos and the Tiger-Cats. This is
the tenth year since the Trophy’s inception, dating back to 1986. The Argonauts have
taken the title every year except 1989, 1992 and 1993.

THECOACH: Mike Faragalli notched his first win as a head coach July 6 with a 37-
24 victory over the Ottawa Rough Riders in the 1995 home opener. He was named
Skipper of the Argonauts Jan. 24, 1995. At 36, he is the CFL’s youngest head coach and
returns to Canadian football after spending the previous four seasons with Bowling Green
(Ohio) State University as offensive coordinator. In his 14 years as a football coach,
Faragalli has never been part of a team with a losing record. His father, Joe, spent eight
years coaching in the CFL with Saskatchewan, Edmonton and Ottawa. Joe led the
Eskimos to a 1987 Grey Cup win with a 38-36 victory over the Bob O’Billovich-led
Toronto Argonauts.
Faragalli has succeeded at every coaching level making three trips to the Grey Cup
(1985-86 and 1990) ultimately winning a CFL championship in 1986. He has coached
offensive players to stardom such as Mike (Pinball) Clemons (William and Mary, 1983-
84), Tracy Ham (Edmonton, 1990), Mike Kerrigan (Hamilton, 1986) and Craig Ellis
(Edmonton, 1990). He credits his success to his mentor and father, Joe. He has also
coached alongside CFL greats - Hugh Campbell, Cal Murphy, Don Sutherin and Don
Matthews while as a guest coach for Edmonton in 1979. He made the leap to the pros in
1985 as offensive coordinator with the Tiger-Cats. The Tabbies went on to take the CFL
East and quarterback Ken Hobart was named a Division all-star. The following year he
tutored Cat pivot Mike Kerrigan who led offensive assaults on opposing teams stopping
only after the 39-15 Grey Cup victory over Edmonton that year. Faragalli left the Cats to
join his father and the Montreal Alouettes in 1987 but took a position as offensive
coordinator with Trinity College (Hartford, Ct.) when the CFL franchise ceased
operations. He returned to the CFL a year later, this time with the Eskimos. For three
seasons (1988-90) his offence, led by the potent Tracy Ham, lit up the scoreboards. He
helped take the club to the 1990 Grey Cup, a game in which the Esks lost to Winnipeg,
50-11.
