Car # 5 - 1966 Monza 140 pg
![]() |
This car actually appeared at two different dealerships over about a six-month period. The first time I saw it listed, I decided to go have a look. I wasn't hunting too seriously right then, but thought, "what the heck - doesn't hurt to go see it."
I get there, and this car is actually in really good shape. No rust, great floors, interior in top shape, optional tissue dispenser, very clean 140 engine, (not too thrilled about the powerglide, but what can you do?), very nice. I ask the nearest salesman - he tells me it is on consignment and the owner is looking for $8500. That's a bit high, so I go wander around for a while. Most Monzas in this region seem to go for about $3000-4000 in good shape. I'm curious why this is so much. I go ask someone else. HE tells me the car is going for $9500. "So how come this car is worth two-and-a-half times the going rate?" I ask. "What," he says, "you think you could find a car like this for $4000?" "For a Monza," I say, "sure." "WELL," he says, throwing his nose in the air and turning his back on me, "WE don't sell MONZAS HERE!"
First lesson - make sure the salesman has a clue what he is talking about.
Six months later, this car shows up at another dealership. The listing says $8000 this time. Not sure whether they sold it.
